ABOUT THE CLUB AND INSTRUCTORS

The Kodokan is a small friendly club based in Wandsworth, south London open to all levels and beginners are always welcome.

Our club was founded in 1974 by Arthur Austin and his brother Robert.

The club is now run by  Arthur and his son James, who is now the prime instructor.

Arthur holds the grade of 6 th  Dan and James 5 th  Dan – certified by both the Japan Aikido Association (JAA) and the British Aikido Association (BAA).

Both are also registered coaches with the BAA and have taught at national courses.

Both have also practiced with a number of high grade visiting Japanese instructors and some of the elite of British Aikido.

Yamada Sensai and Arthur

CLUB LINEAGE

Tomiki Aikido was introduced into the UK and Europe in 1959 by Senta Yamada and his prime student was John Waite who became the first British black belt. Since its formation the club has had close links with Kikusui Kai – the organisation formed by Senta Yamaha and John Waite in the sixties. John Waite was Arthur’s prime instructor when he commenced his Aikido journey back in the early seventies together with Tetsuo Ehara who was the resident Japanese instructor in the UK at this time. Arthur and James continued to train with Yamada sensei his regular visits to the UK before his death, as well as many other visiting senior instructors from Japan.
